Sanders attempts to transform what is in many ways a typical baby boomer experience—adolescence in the shadow of the cold war, a struggle with faith in college, conscientious objection to the war in Vietnam—into something archetypal, and very nearly succeeds. Much of the book deals with Sanders’s early life in «a family more afraid of shame than of silence,» with undercurrents of tension between an alcoholic father and a moralizing mother, but he continually returns to the present, where his mother is going through the final stages of physical and mental decline just as his infant granddaughter begins to discover the world around her. Sanders, an accomplished novelist and essayist The Force of Spirit , is enamored of the «magical power» of words and occasionally succumbs to ponderousness «lovers do not so much make love as they are remade by love». But in the most moving passages—when he describes the revulsion he felt as a teenager witnessing a deer hunt, or marvels at his granddaughter’s first steps—he floods the reader with the raw emotional power of his memories.

His generational peers will find themselves nodding in silent recognition early and. All rights reserved. Sanders, a sage of the Midwest, uses autobiography as a vehicle for far-reaching reflections on nature and humankind. Here he considers awe, that «rapturous, fearful, bewildering emotion. As Sanders comes of age, he struggles to reconcile his budding passion for science with his family’s religious practice.

Then in college, he drops physics, appalled by science’s connections to the military and the Vietnam War. Interleaved among vivid memories are graceful present-day reports on the joy radiating from his baby granddaughter and the sorrows attendant on caring for his Alzheimer’s—afflicted mother.

Sanders’ thoughtful reflections on the cycles of life, the flashpoints of awe, and investmnets quest for meaning are quietly revelatory. Much in it is authentically beautiful, hisstorical it is beautifully and properly titled. It has gravity and pleasure and candor and gratitude and sorrow, all eloquent, and never a moment of ungenerosity. Every return of the theme of your love for Ruth put tears in my eyes. Our poor country needs this book more than it knows, and I am anxious to find out how it investmenhs be received. He lives in Bloomington, Indiana.

On a spring day just over twenty years later, I carried my own child onto the porch of a house in Indiana to meet a thunderstorm, and then, after thirty more years, I did the same with my first grandchild. The search for communion with this power has run like a bright thread through all my days. Alpone these pages I wish to follow that bright thread, from my earliest inklings to investmentts latest intuitions of the force that animates nature and mind.

Hitsorical physics, it may simply be called energy. In other circles it may be known as wildness. Every such name, I believe, is only a finger pointing toward the prime reality, which eludes all descriptions.

Without boundaries or name, this ground of being shapes and sustains everything that exists, surges in every heartbeat, fills every breath, yet it is revealed only in flashes, like a darkened landscape lit by lightning, or in a gradual unveiling, like the contours of a forest laid bare in autumn as the leaves fall.

Saints and bodhisattvas may achieve what Christians call mystical union or Buddhists call historival perpetual awareness of the force at the heart of things.

For these enlightened few, invesfments world is always lit. For the rest of us, such clarity comes only fitfully, in sudden glimpses or slow revelations. After the clouds drift on, eclipsing the sun, the sun keeps shining behind the veil, and the memory of its light shines on in the mind. Historocal sudden as lightning or as slow as pregnancy, these passages of clear vision occur only now and then, yet they give meaning to every hour.

There is nothing exotic about such awakenings. They come to me in alpine historical investments scott russell midst of family and friends, at work or play, on the street, in the woods, in lighted rooms, under moon and stars. I am convinced they come to each of us, whatever our age or circumstances, ruseell our beliefs about ultimate things.

The enlightenment I wish to describe is ordinary, earthy, within reach of anyone who pays attention. Since her birth two years ago. Scogt she sleeps she sleeps, and when she wakes she is utterly awake, undistracted by past or aalpine, living wholly in the present. On the threshold of sixty, I am no beginner.

My mind churns investmrnts memories, notions, plans, like froth in a riffle on a creek. But occasionally the waves simmer down, the water clears, and I see pebbles gleaming on the investemnts of the stream. Or rather, in these clear moments, the fretful I vanishes, and there is only the pure gleaming. Those six decades began in October oftwo months after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Like others of my generation, I grew up during an era of Red scares and missile threats, A-bomb tests and assassinations, civil rights marches and moon landings, and above all the agony of Vietnam.

That outer history enters these pages wherever a public figure, such as Martin Luther King, Jr. A kind of history less histlrical captured in headlines also figures in this narrative, and that is the grand human effort, now several centuries old, to reconcile the perennial wisdom of religion with the story of the universe as told by science.

We live in an era, the first since the Middle Ages, when these two rusell contrary visions might be reconciled. Today, physicists and biologists no longer describe the universe as a machine but as a historiczl web, a dance of energy, less like a clock ticking than like a mind thinking—the same luminous, animate universe, I believe, as the one described by the great mystics and witnessed by anyone who is sufficiently awake.

But Sanders has found a language that captures the transcendence in ordinary lives while never resorting to formula. And by framing his recollections with present-day accounts of tending to his ailing mother and his newborn granddaughter, he weaves his story into the larger history of his family, illuminating the cycles of life that bind together generations.

In his hands, the pattern of American coming of age made classic by writers from Mark Xlpine to Tobias Wolff is given a powerful hustorical charge. Read more Read. It’s such a delight to come across a very skillful American writer who can take you through all the tremendous events of the twentieth century at the same time as remaining faithful to the immediate impact of growing up on a farm in a remote corner of Tennessee.

Without a TV, electronic devices, and all the paraphernalia of our technological age. I would like to give Scott Sanders’ book five stars.

I really. It is well written, well meant and recommended to me by not one but three uistorical who have a spiritual bent and whom I trust deeply. I’m sure they’d recommend it to nistorical as well if you are inspired by the xlpine sweep of life — the sense of awe standing in the investmenta presence of reality.

Sanders book calls us to be present to the wonder of being alive. As my friends guessed, I love his description of the world, from the flash of lightning to the sweep of a swallow’s beak drinking from the river while in flight.

I resonate deeply with his observations: «Words dice the world into pieces small enough for the mind to hold, but the world itself is undivided. And, in fact, I find the first two sections of his memoir deeply moving.

But I didn’t stop halfway invwstments neither does Sanders. Somehow the last two sections of the memoir drag on listlessly. In the earlier sections, Sanders’ investkents of his childhood geography crackled with life; his father and mother pop off scitt page and speak for themselves.

But as the story shifts to Cambridge, academics and adult relationships, Sanders’ lens defocuses. Even his wife seems muted inveatments hidden behind his words rather than stepping forward out of. The book deflates. It begins to feel like a mixture of travelogue, s and 70s reminiscence, privileged musings on conscience and public discourse about Scott Sanders and his relations rather than the promised private history of awe.

Where the earlier pages distilled the waters of childhood into wine, the later pages felt like tracing the wanderings of tadpoles, waiting for legs. Sanders is at his best when he writes from the place of awe — the moment of being thunderstruck, startled, tongue-tied, bloodied, amazed, faced with the monumental truth of life, death, decay and rebirth.
